Shaping the future together – Review of NEB_MEETS in Magdeburg and funding for the NEB_PROJECT “LandKiez Thondorf”

How do you start shaping the future together? This was the question addressed at the third NEB_MEETS network meeting on May 27, 2025, at the Magdeburg Gesellschaftshaus. The event was hosted by the NEB_NETZWERKBÜRO Saxony-Anhalt on behalf of the Structural Change Unit Saxony-Anhalt in the Central German Mining Region.
In addition to short presentations on projects and initiatives from across Saxony-Anhalt, the focus was on exchange: Thematically structured “think tanks” addressed participation, new forms of cooperation, local and international perspectives, bureaucratic challenges, and the question of how the New European Bauhaus can be put into practice in concrete terms. We would like to take this opportunity to once again express our sincere thanks to all participants and contributors!

The event clearly demonstrated that change requires networks and spaces for joint thinking—because this is the only way to enable joint action. The closing presentation by Prof. Dr. Christopher Dell spanned the arc from Magdeburg’s Klosterbergegarten to the idea of the “just city”—and reinforced the message that the many small projects in the state are more than just individual initiatives. They are training grounds for a sustainable society!
An important moment: State Secretary Dr. Jürgen Ude presented the funding approval for around €302,000 from the Just Transition Fund (JTF) to the NEB_PROJECT “LandKiez Thondorf” during the event. The aim is to transform the former estate in the district of Thondorf (town of Gerbstedt, Mansfeld-Südharz district) into an open third place for intergenerational encounters, diverse cultural offerings, and community life in the countryside in accordance with the NEB_KRITERIEN: SCHÖN. NACHHALTIG. GEMEINSAM. (BEAUTIFUL. SUSTAINABLE. COMMUNITY.) criteria. The project is being supported by the Center for Social Research Halle (ZSH) e.V. with a participatory feasibility study!
