WHAT MAKES INDIA URBAN?
Challenges towards mobility, infrastructure, energy and perpetual change

Das Ausstellungsprojekt „What Makes India Urban?“ porträtiert aktuelle Entwicklungen in den neu entstehenden urbanen Räumen des Subkontinents und die Verknüpfung von Urbanisierung und kulturellem Wandel. In über 50 Projekten wird Einblick in die verschiedenen Lebenswelten der indischen Städte gewährt: in die Handlungsbereiche von Architekten und Stadtplanern sowie in die Reflexion indischer Künstler. Die Ausstellung lädt dazu ein, in indische Bilderwelten einzutauchen und in audiovisuellen Installationen zu verweilen, die einen umfassenden Überblick über die rasanten Entwicklungen im Land geben. Das Projekt wurde kuratiert von Anand Patel, Ahmedabad, und Ulla Giesler, Berlin. Wir danken den beteiligten Architekten, Künstlern und Theoretikern für ihre Beiträge.

The exhibition project “What Makes India Urban?” depicts recent developments in the subcontinent’s emerging urban spaces and their connection to urbanisation and cultural shifts. More than 50 projects provide insight into India’s diverse urban environments: into the range of work of architects and urban planners as well as reflections from Indian artists. The exhibition invites the visitor to dip into a world of Indian imagery and to spend time in audio-visual installations, providing a broad overview of the rapid changes in this country. The exhibition is being curated by Anand Patel, Ahmedabad, and Ulla Giesler, Berlin. Our sincere thanks go to the participating architects, artists and theorists for their generous contributions and creative input.
