Uli Kempendorff’s Field

With the release of its fourth album, FIELD has further developed its very own sound – a subtly interwoven web full of multi-directional counterpoints that is deeply rooted in jazz and moves freely between abstraction and concreteness. With Christopher Dell on vibraphone, Jonas Westergaard on bass and Peter Bruun on drums, the band unites four interesting players from the German and Danish scene and has quickly developed into a tight-knit group since its (re-)formation in 2018, whose language is characterised by subtlety and power. The TAZ wrote: ‘Field play an open, yet precisely articulated form of jazz, with complex melodies that you can always follow, an ever-mutating swing (…) but never brittle and academic. There is an anarchic, ironic tone that never gives itself away to grand gestures.’

In a quartet that has mastered the fine art of interlocking four worlds of thought and sound, everyone has everyone in front of their ears at every moment. Energy lurks everywhere. Incidentally, a lot of energy is used to channel energy, to give it direction, character, a flow and concentrated eddies. There are quietly implied screams, explosions, peaks. They cover nothing. Every musician, every movement influences the way in which what the composer has written is shaped at every moment. A whole is created. It becomes audible if it is quiet enough.
