The trio Hülsmann – Wogram – Dell is a special formation in many respects. Starting with the unusual instrumentation: in addition to Julia Hülsmann on grand piano, we experience Christopher Dell on vibraphone and Nils Wogram on trombone. This is a jazz trio unlike any other, at least in this country. Just as special is the love of the three for the Beatles: as early as 2021, they designed a programme with “Come Together” that draws from all creative phases of the Fab Four and transfers the songs into completely new, surprising contexts. The programme had its world premiere in the great hall of the Elbphilharmonie, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the first Beatles concert in Hamburg. Hülsmann decided on this special instrumentation because, on the one hand, the Beatles’ pieces are so catchy that you can easily recognise them even without singing, and on the other hand, they are so ingenious in their melodies, harmonies and structures that they can enchant in very different arrangements. Christopher Dell, in his free, concise way of interpreting music, sets highly exciting impulses with the equally percussive and floating sound of the vibraphone, which complements Hülsmann’s reduced piano playing so wonderfully. Nils Wogram on trombone is something like the “voice” in this team; with his virtuoso and warm playing style, however, also a kind of curved bridge between the two keyboard/percussion instruments. With the addition of a few of their own pieces, this trio will also create very special moments of sound at the COME TOGETHER EXPERIENCE, where free playing is combined with arranged music and new sounds with melodies.
